DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. –  “Making a Murderer” subject Steven Avery has a new, high profile attorney, from Downers Grove.

Avery’s 2005 murder conviction is the subject of the Netflix documentary series.

Attorney Kathleen Zellner is taking his case.

She’ll also work with the Midwest Innocence Project.

Avery’s conviction has been upheld once on appeal.

He’s serving a life sentence for the murder of 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach.

Earlier this week, the White House responded to online petitions asking President Obama to pardon Avery.

The response states the President cannot pardon state prisoners.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has already said he will not pardon Avery.
