Looking for a way to give back this season? A number of local charities could use your time and effort. Here are a few volunteer opportunities across Chicago this December.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is always looking for extra help. Volunteer at one of its member soup kitchens, pantries or shelters by serving a meal or delivering food.

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to package and distribute meals to the hungry, sort toys for underprivileged children and ring bells next to those famous red kettles. There are opportunities all over the city and suburbs.

Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly has a flexible holiday project that will brighten an elder’s day. Anytime during December you can deliver a gift to a senior and then spend an hour hanging out with them. You can even choose a senior who lives in a neighborhood near you.

The Night Ministry is a Chicago-based organization that assists those struggling with poverty or homelessness. Volunteers can serve a meal, donate hygiene kits for people coming in off the streets or provide baby care kits for teen mothers.
