CHICAGO — After 10 years of serving Chicago’s Uptown community, Inspiration Kitchens will close at the end of the month.

Inspiration Kitchens provides training to homeless and low income people to work in the culinary field while also serving food to the paying public.

Donations have fallen dramatically and the operators say they can no longer afford to keep the place open.

However, Inspiration Kitchens is keeping its Garfield Park location open.

Executive Director and CEO Shannon Stewart used an online blog post to make the announcement. She explained that in 2014 the restaurant lost $350,000 in federal funding and had to close their West Side restaurant location. The next year, funding was cut again for these programs.

“We can no longer justify the cost of running Inspiration Kitchens-Uptown, which as a full-service restaurant carries high fixed costs with low profit margins,” she wrote.

Stewart said Inspiration Cafe, at Wilson and Broadway will remain open and “will continue to serve hot meals in an atmosphere of dignity and respect to individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty.”

This location will stay open with the help of 1,000 volunteers, many from the Uptown community.
