A couple is suing a Hammond police officer and the city over the shooting of their family dog.

Lilly the pitbull survived being shot in the face June 9th outside Norma Maldonado and Dario Lemus’ home.

Their federal lawsuit alleges the officer fired three times when the dog was next to a 7-year-old child.

The officer claims the dog was loose and lunged at him. The family denies it.

Hammond’s mayor and police chief have previously said the shooting was justified.
