CHICAGO — The Lincoln Park Zoo posted a sad update Thursday and announced that their beloved gorilla Bana was euthanized this week.

“It is with deep sadness that we share that the difficult but responsible decision was made to euthanize 29-year-old female western lowland gorilla Bana,” the zoo’s Facebook post stated.

The zoo said Bana was diagnosed with congestive cardiac failure earlier in March, followed by a second diagnosis of bronchopneumonia.

“Animal care and veterinary staff worked diligently to ensure she was taking her medications in an effort to improve her heart’s function. Unfortunately, full recovery in this condition is not possible, and in this case, even stabilization was not successful. The decision to euthanize her came after an abrupt decline on March 26.,” the post said.

WGN’s cameras were on the scene in 2012 when Bana welcomed a baby. You can see archive footage from that moment in the video player above.

“She was a great mother who was tolerant of youngsters—whether her own or others!—playing on top of her,” the Facebook post concluded. “The troop, including her son Djeke, was able to visit with Bana after her passing as they would naturally do in the wild. Animal care will continue to monitor the troop’s behavior in the weeks following the loss of Bana.”
