A suburban teen was arrested at O’Hare airport over the weekend and is facing federal terrorism charges after authorities say he tried to join ISIS.

19-year-old Mohammed Hamzah Khan of Boilingbrook is being held in the federal detention center until another hearing Thursday.  He was arrested Saturday night at before boarding a plane to Vienna, Austria with a connection to Istanbul, Turkey.   Agents say that it is common for U.S. fighters to cross over from Turkey to Syria or Iraq and allege Khan was going to join the terrorist group ISIS.

While Khan was being questioned at the airport,  the house he shares with his parents was searched.   In it FBI agents allegedly found numerous handwritten documents in a notebook that expressed support for ISIS. There was a page with drawings depicting an ISIS flag with the words in Arabic, “Come to Jihad.”

Neighbors who live four doors down say they would see Khan go across to a Muslim grade school and foundation several times a day.  They say he has a younger brother.   The school is closed until Wednesday.

There is an “Individual C” named in the federal complaint, a person Khan allegedly met online and provided him with a number of someone to contact when he got to Istanbul.  The U.S. attorney’s office wouldn’t comment about that person or if other arrests will be coming.

Kahn is the first person arrested in the Chicago area and charged with attempting to ISIS.

Khan will be back in court on Thursday.
